Vegas, Langley share lead at Greenbrier Classic

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. - The second round of the Greenbrier Classic was a day that had Tiger Woods make the cut, defending champion Angel Cabrera missing it, and for the first time in the five years since the Old White TPC alterations, golfers under par won't be playing during the weekend.

Johnattan Vegas tied for the second-lowest round of the day with a 5-under 65 to share the lead with Scott Langley, who took off another stroke after his 8-under first round.

"It was a solid round overall, from the beginning to the end," said Vegas, who had five birdies and 13 pars, giving him 11 birdies and just two bogeys in two rounds. "I think I hit every single green, gave myself a lot of opportunities, able to make some, some that nearly went in."

The rainy conditions softened the par 70, 7,287-yard C.B. Macdonald track to the point where 14 players who shot 1-under were left out in the cold.

The only time that has happened in the six-year history of the event was in the inaugural Classic in 2010, when the cut line matched Friday's - 2-under 138.

Vegas, who teed off in the afternoon on Friday, was able to survive the inevitable bumpy greens that couldn't bounce back from the tournament's morning traffic.

Langley wasn't quite as fortunate, although he avoided too much trouble with only two bogeys.

The first-round leader was unable to read the speed of the greens affected by the steady rain that fell most of the day.

"I wasn't getting the ball to the hole," Langley said. "If you gave me two feet of extra speed, I think I would have shot 4- or 5-under today. I left a lot of putts within six inches of the hole just right in the heart. I just need to be a little bit more assertive on the greens (on Saturday)."

Woods is tied for 26, but only four strokes behind the leader, putting the 79-time PGA Tour winner in the mix for his first win since reeling off five in 2013. His last victory was the Bridgestone Invitational on Aug. 4, 2013, putting him 23 months to the day since his most-recent championship.

Woods didn't stick around for questions after his round. He started on No. 1, and, after opening with a birdie and nine pars in the first 10 holes, he was even in the last eight with three birdies and three bogeys.

Also spending the weekend in Greenbrier County are 2011 champion Scott Stallings - the tournament's only defending titlist still alive - and Travelers Championship winner Bubba Watson, who managed to survive controversy he created when he announced Thursday on Twitter his decision to paint over the Confederate flag on the roof of his 1969 Dodge Charger, the "General Lee" from the show Dukes of Hazzard, that he owns.

Inaugural Classic champion Stuart Appleby and 2012 winner Ted Potter Jr. are nursing injuries and didn't play.

Watson has been steady for two days of damp weather, recording only two bogeys and eight birdies in his quest to become the first player since Rory McIlroy to win in back-to-back weeks on tour. McIlroy won the Open Championship, took a week off, then won the Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship in consecutive weeks.

The list of 78 players to make the cut didn't include Hurricane's Sam O'Dell or Bakerton's David Bradshaw. O'Dell followed a 2-under 68 on Thursday with a 2-over 72. O'Dell had two birdies and two bogeys, but was doomed with a triple-bogey on No. 5.

O'Dell was one of two amateurs in the field, with Haskins Award winner and Stanford rising junior Maverick McNealy - who made the cut with a 5-under - being the other.

O'Dell is the sixth player in the history of the State Amateur to earn an exemption.

"Kind of my goal each day was try to stay around even par and make some putts," said O'Dell, who was trying to become the first Amateur champion to make the cut at the Greenbrier Classic since Jonathan Bartlett in 2010. "This morning I wasn't making the putts I did yesterday, and then I hit a bad shot on 5. The weather got us a little bit and I kind of got a bad break. I didn't hit a great shot on the green, but I got a lie that was awful. I made 7, but I came back strong after that. I really couldn't ask for anything more, to be honest."

Bradshaw, playing in his fifth PGA Tour event, was even after the first round, but had to battle back from consecutive bogeys to start the second round. The former West Virginia Conference Player of the Year then followed two pars with a double bogey on No. 5, which all but eliminated Bradshaw, putting him six strokes behind the cut with 13 holes remaining.

Despite the morning tee time, the weather wasn't kind to Bradshaw.

"I think for the two days when it was raining I was about 8 over," he said. "When it was dry, I was 5 under. I wasn't born to play in the rain apparently. I didn't know that about myself, but now I do."
