Three shots separate 16 players at top of Greenbrier Classic leaderboard

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. - The logjam at the top of the sixth Greenbrier Classic was a reminder of the first in 2010, when a par 70, 7,020-yard Old White with forgiving fairways and slower greens saw 103 players were below par after the third round.

On Friday, Jason Bohn's 9-under 61 put him in a four-way tie for the lead and 74 players were under par as the tournament enters its final day.

Ten birdies and one bogey highlighted the career-best round for Bohn, a 23-year pro with two PGA Tour wins who hails from Lewisburg, Pa.

The hot competition topic of the week has been the Greenbrier Valley weather, which yielded rain, some wind and plenty of scoring chances.

"It was just spitting (rain) a little bit (on Saturday)," said Bohn, who added that the wind began picking up at the conclusion of his round. "It (was) kind of shifting directions from what we played (Saturday morning), so I guess in the morning it kind of goes up the mountain, and in the afternoon it seems like it comes down the mountain, so that'll be the tricky part is how consistent the wind stays."

Sharing the catbird seat with Bohn were Sean O'Hair, S.J. Park and Bryce Molder, but there are 16 players within three shots of the lead, setting up a race for the championship or at least a spot in the Open Championship. Four of the top 12 finishers not all ready exempt for the British Open in two weeks earn an exemption into the major July 16-19 at St. Andrews.

David Lingmerth was the only player remaining who was even close to Bohn's achievement with a 6-under 64 on Saturday to move into the mix as one of three players at 9-under for the tournament.

"It's becoming more and more common out here, I think," Molder said of the tight race. "The cut was only seven shots from the lead, and used to not happen very often, but the field is so deep and so good. If nobody decides to run off and leave everyone, you kind of get that bunched-up feeling, so I'm not surprised with the weather we've had."

Justin Thomas, Danny Lee, David Hearn and Chad Collins are one stroke back as the final day begins for the Classic, which was decided by a playoff in 2011 and 2012.

"I'll be targeting toward getting off to a good start and trying to contend for this golf tournament," said Hearn, who is seeking his first win on tour. "I'm only one back right now. That might change by the end of it. I feel like I'm playing good enough golf this week to be the champion, so tomorrow I'm going to go out with that mindset."

Tiger Woods, who is playing the weekend for the fifth time in seven starts, failed to make a charge on moving day. He was 1-under par on the front nine, but birdies on 10 and 15 were buoyed by a double-bogey on 11 and bogeys on 13 and 17.

He hit his tee shot out inches out of bounds on No. 11, determined following a measurement by PGA Tour official and former West Virginia Golf Association executive director Ken Tackett.

"It was a bad shot, but that's just the way it goes," Woods said. "For some reason I hit a couple bad shots today. I gave myself plenty of looks early to get something going early and get some kind of run. Could have easily been 3-, 4-, 5-under par on the front nine and just got nothing out of it, and hit that shot on 11, and there it goes."
