The Greenbrier Classic has doubled its number of world top-50 players expected to compete, with the addition of William McGirt and Jimmy Walker.

Should they follow those commitments, they will join defending champion Danny Lee and Bubba Watson at the top end of the 156-man field. The official entry deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, July 1, with play beginning the following week.

Other PGA Tour event winners committing are Troy Merritt and long-hitting favorite Gary Woodland. Patrick Rodgers, one of the promising young players at age 23, also was added to the commitment list.

McGirt is the most recent winner of the group, and it was a biggie - the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio. The 36-year-old North Carolina native beat the usual loaded field for his first career victory, good enough to propel him to a current No. 46 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

After years of countless mini-tours, McGirt broke into the big leagues in 2011 and has stayed since. He has five top-10 finishes, has earned $2.8 million, and is 13th in the FedExCup points standings.

Walker is 42nd in the world, though he has been as high as 10th after winning five events in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. He needs a boost, but he does have three top-10 finishes this year and is 51st in the FedExCup standings.

A two-time event winner, Woodland is 68th in the world and 65th in the FedExCup. His trademark is good old brute force - his 308.0 yards per drive is fourth on the PGA Tour.

Merritt enters this week as the defending champion of the Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, Maryland. He has struggled this season, missing 10 of 18 cuts, slipping to 94th in the world and 104th in the FedExCup.

Rodgers came straight out of Stanford, using sponsor's exemptions to help him earn his Tour card. He was tied for 46th in the recent U.S. Open, but has not had a top-25 finish since March.

All five are multiple Greenbrier Classic visitors, with Walker set to make his sixth visit. He has three top-four finishes at the Old White TPC, though he missed the cut in 2014 and did not play here last year.

Woodland tied for fourth in 2011.

After the U.S. Open, Watson dropped from fourth to fifth in the world, as champion Dustin Johnson leaped to No. 3 and sent several down a notch. Lee sits at 44th.
