Since the Greenbrier Classic was last played, Patrick Reed hasn't completely let go of the brash attitude that turned eyebrows around the PGA Tour.
He has gained something else, a heroic moniker: Captain America.
And Captain America is coming to the Old White TPC for the fourth time.
Reed is a five-time Tour winner who is ranked 17th in the Official World Golf Ranking, currently the highest among Classic commitments. Kevin Kisner (22nd) and Phil Mickelson (24th) are the others in the world top 25.
But Reed may be most famous for his performance in the 2016 Ryder Cup, in which he went 3-1-1 and led the U.S. to victory over Europe at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota. The Americans won 17-11, regaining the Cup for the first time since 2008.
Reed also excelled in the match-play format in the college ranks, leading Augusta State to Division I national championships in 2010 and 2011.
His last Tour victory came during the 2016 FedExCup Playoffs, when he won the Barclays on Long Island. That helped him to a third-place finish for the full season.
In his visits to White Sulphur Springs, Reed missed the cut in 2013, then finished tied for 26th (2014) and 29th (2015).
Classic officials also announced the commitment of world 50th-ranked J.B. Holmes, a tournament regular. The Campbellsville, Kentucky native has played every year but 2013, when he was recovering from a fractured ankle.
He shot a third-round 60 in the 2010 Classic, but three 69s relegated him to 16th in the low-scoring event. He has missed one cut and finished 27th, 23rd and 22nd.
He has four Tour victories, the most recent being the 2015 Houston Open. He is in his 12th year on the Tour.
Complimentary grounds badges are still available for the tournament, to be held July 3-9 in White Sulphur Springs. To register for badges while supplies remain, go to www.greenbrierclassic.com. Upgrades to Springhouse weekly badges are $249.
